DFD & USB Printing

Postby KevinCox » Thu Jul 28, 2011 4:30 pm

Using DFD 4.53 and Win XP. Set up USB printers, shared them, and use Net Use .../persistent:yes to assign to LPT ports 1 & 2.

Most of the time this works just fine. At other times, when DFD tries to print, it can not see the printers and will give you the retry, cancel, close choice. Normally this happens after a fresh, machine restart. Restarting again sometimes fixes the problem, sometimes not. The only reliable way for this to solve the problem is signing onto XP using the Administrator account, even though all the other users have administrator rights.

Anyone seen this problem and know why these printers become unavailable?

It is a Microsoft issue so ask them.

We usually add the code to net use \delete the printers and net use them again in the batch file that starts DFD. That hasn't failed us yet.

Otherwise, you're depending on the operating system to remember what you did.

Removing and re-setting the net use usually worked in the past, but you are dealing with a program and an operating system that are both out of date.

Assuming this just started recently, then the question is always, "What has changed." With a setup like that, change is the enemy because any change you make can torpedo a working system.
