Form in use then Unable to open form printers

Postby ALANKEST » Wed Oct 17, 2012 3:55 pm

Newbie question - new to the forum I mean, not to DfD.

I am running, or rather WAS running, DfD 4.2 - don't ask - quite happily under Win 7 32 bit, using DOSPRN for printer support. HDD failed and critical DfD system files (not the user data) had to be recovered from the bad HDD. This meant that all the files in the Dataease directory now have the date of the recovery. I fixed the AUTOEXEC.NT and CONFIG.NT files. No compatibility options are selected in the PIF.

When tried to run DEASE.EXE it starts but immediately after logging in I get: 'Form in use' with press any key to acknowledge, followed by 'Unable to open form printers' with press any key to acknowledge then 'An unknown printer is installed'.

I appear to be able to view and enter data OK but obviously will need to print at some time.

Is this related to the USERFORM.DBS post? If so what date do I set the USERFORM.DBS file dates to using touch.exe? If not, any suggestions?

TIA, Andy

Make sure the printers.dat file is in the Depath= and that it has some size.. i.e., not = to 0 bytes... And make sure that there is only ONE printers.dat where your application can see it...

There is one copy, non zero length of PRINTERS.DBS and PRINTERS.DAT in the DePath folder c:\Program Files\dataease. These are the only ones on the whole c: drive.

There are no copies in the working folder, which is on another drive and not in the DePath.

However I am now getting "File not found" rather than "Form in use".

And from within DataEase, you've done a 6-4-6 exiting to dos and typed set enter, and the Depath is what you expect????

Is the app on a server or is this completely standalone. Depath is only needed for a networked db and then the depath should be on the shared drive.

Just check all the usual suspects including rights/permissions. It is Win7 and has UAC after all. A real PITA!

Cracked it! I thought it must be something simple - the guy who recovered the dataease directory for me put everything in READ ONLY!

Thank for your extremely prompt and helpful advice. Yours is a resource to be treasured.

That, I'd suggest (from an IT professional point of view), is exactly the right thing to do ... so that you make your own working (read/write) copy in the folder/directory where it is needed AND also retain a fall-back version should the problem recur. It's known as 'protecting the user from him/herself' !

It might be also what happens by default if you copy the db from a CD/DVD.
