Field Lengths need lengthening!!

Postby Rob Williams » Fri Jan 14, 2011 2:55 pm

Hi All,

My name is Rob Williams and I am a keen amateur/newbie to databases!

We have a database that was originally Dataease DOS, became Dataease 6.1 via Sapphire, and now will be Ffenics.

we have a form that has two sub-forms in it to hold results of a telephone call, at the moment the field length is 58 characters = pain!, need the filed length to be 255 characters on a word-wrapped line to enable meaningful data entry.

I cannot see how to do this as the field length box in definition is greyed out!

please help!!!!!!

Best regards

Rob :?

Hi Rob,

If items on the field defintion dialog are greyed out, it means that the document you are looking at is not a form (or in DfW parlance, does not own the table).

The same should apply to all the other fields on this document.

Is this the case?

Hi Adrian,

yes, all the other fields are greyed out on the whole form, this is a migrate from dataease 6.1

I have made a form that can access the table that the data is stored in and made the field length 255 - but I still cant change it in the original form

I am probably missing something quite basic - in DE6.1 I could look directly at the table and manipulate the data - I don't seem to be able to see the tables in Ffenics

In Ff, a form is what was a 'table defining form' in DfW; an aspect is a 'table using form'. There has never been the ability to look directly at a table, though, a la SQL.

The issue might be the migration. Is there a document in this migrated app that has the same name as this form you are trying to change but with an 'x' at the end?

Not that I can see!

as some of the changes I want to do a quite radical it might be worth a re-write from the ground up!!

is it possible, if a re-write were done, to map fields from the old databse to the re-written one so that all of the data is kept?

Yes! Just make sure that you export the data from DfW with a header row.

If you change the name of a field, edit the exported data file to change the name in the header row.

Just keep a track of any changes in the names. To keep that simple, stick them in a spreadsheet.
