Don't think DataEase would write: "If you are using outdated database tools such as DataEase our consultants will be able to migrate all of your data into Ffenics for you in days and have all your tools working in Windows."

From a personal viewpoint, I would be very careful about using a statement such as that. It could be considered defamatory, especially as DatEase still has a significant installed and active user base. I bet Fred Kingston knows a few.

Agreed, and a strong indication that DataEase itself is not behind this stunt. This is from the email if anybody wondered, and not my personal viewpoint either ;-)

In the last 30 years... the marketing departments of the various incarnations of Dataease/Multi-something have been like a swinging door... It would have been incredibly easy to acquire at least 3 different versions of DataEase customer/consultant databases during that time...

It seems marketing people have these grandiose plans that rarely last more than a season.... :D

There's a large disparity between marketing, and delivery.... :D

Fred

You would like John Wanamaker's famous quote:

"Half the money I spend on advertising is wasted; the trouble is I don't know which half"

There have been so many company ownership machinations over the last 20 years - up to and including this year - that I can't even be bothered to try and remember them.

We are no longer anything to do with either the current owners of DataEase or any former owners. The current company that employs me (Database Software Ltd) owns Ffenics - name and codebase - outright, but that doesn't stop anyone trying to sell services based on it.

Any comments expressed by any such companies, whether associated or not, would be their own opinion. But we might well have a word with them if we thought their marketing was counter productive.

As an aside, most people we come across asking for conversions are on DataEase 6.52 or earlier (at least 8 years old), and some even on DFD 4.53 (20 years old!). Those would certainly be considered pretty obsolete by most people who haven't a DataEase background - eyebrows get raised these days if you're using 5 year old software, let alone 20 years! I'm not saying this is a good thing, but it is the way it is. We are having to teach DOS to people who've never heard of it to get conversions done - they try not to laugh...

a similar one from George Best :

'I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered.'

I love the following George Best anecdote. After he had fallen out with Man U due to managerial incompatibility, he married a former Miss World. While on honeymoon in the States - big hotel, bridal suite, gorgeous bride, playing for some American soccer team for more money a game than he'd earned in his whole Man U career, owner of a series of successful night clubs, etc. etc. an embittered ex-pat hotel porter said to him:

"George, you've wasted your life".

His reply is not recorded! Of course, later on the booze did bring him down.

Shouldn't someone just recognise the elephant in the room?

If Ed Paice Geneva=Ed Paice Ffenics it shouldn't be so hard to figure out the rest?

It seems completely natural for me that Ffenics want's to recruit the DataEase users but why hide behind another company? And why not clean the mailing list for people that already have Ffenics ;-)

Yes Fred. And yes, it's the same Ed.

I guess that there's nothing wrong with approaching the people on a list of DataEase customers you happen to have, and offering them an alternative. Especially as ffenics doesn't have much of a profile against the other DBMS packages out there. If I were approaching them, I'd give a lot of emphasis to the fact that any in-house coding expertise would be very useful if their app was ported to ffenics. I just think that slagging off a competitor product is never a productive way to secure business. Not to mention the risk of legal reprisals.

Hasn't this been a busy topic? :)

The email I got likened ffenics to a spreadsheet, and a stepping stone to converting to MS products.. Seemed strange... but what do us stupid yanks know???
